Addiction is highly prevalent in Ireland. Although we may blame our government, our families, our peers, society in general or our cultural inheritance, addiction is a deeply person centred issue which is complex and multi-layered. It is only when we are willing to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions, can we begin to look at the reasons behind our substance or alcohol misuse or the addictive behaviours in which we engage in.
Common attitudes may often indicate a widespread shared denial when it comes to addiction. Apart from the illegality, is there really a difference in somebody who is addicted to un-prescribed drugs as opposed to somebody who is addicted to alcohol? What about people who are described as functioning alcoholics? It’s ok to smoke cannabis, right? It’s harmless to watch sexual pornography, yeah? Is over-eating an addiction?
Whatever the substance or behaviour, there is a human being behind it, with perfectly good reasons for their addiction. Addiction is simply a person’s way of coping.
Although some changes can be almost immediate, recovery from addiction is a life-long learning process. For many, a growing insight is achieved and they reconnect to both themselves and others in ways which they never thought possible. However, slips and relapse may be part of the journey, along with realising and identifying substitution behaviours and coming to terms with feelings and emotions which may have led to the addiction in the first place.
