Death is a process which touches all living things. Despite its certainty, its universality and its widespread discussion, the loss of a loved one can leave us with such personal, unique and intimate feelings, coupled with an unimaginable emptiness so strong, that we may even have difficulty recognising ourselves.
Yet we survive. We manage. We learn to live again.
Loss, grief and bereavement, common themes in our world affect each and every one of us in different ways. We are all unique human beings and therefore our grief is unique. How do we feel when nobody mentions our lost loved one anymore? Who do we talk to? Grief’s oscillating nature is a reminder to us that it is irrespective of time and at anytime we may discover ourselves missing, longing and empty – grieving for the part of us that is lost.
Feelings of anger, sadness, guilt, loneliness, confusion and profound emptiness are not uncommon in grief and bereavement. Although at times it may not feel so, grief and grieving are healthy and normal responses to loss, but we can all benefit from professional support during this process. The natural environment has a vast capacity to support us in our grieving.
